About Us

History

First opened in 1996, The Links at Greystone, formally known as Greystone Golf Club, was the Odenbach family’s 3rd golf course development project. Dolomite Inc, one of the largest materials suppliers in Upstate NY, was founded all the way back in 1920 by John H. Odenbach. He and his family continued to expand in not just materials supplying, but in the golf industry. The Odenbach’s built Shadow Lake, Shadow Pines, and of course, our beloved Greystone; expanding interest in the sport for the Penfield and Rochester community.

In 2000, the Odenbach family sold Dolomite Inc, Greystone, Shadow Pines, and Shadow Lake to Ireland-based Oldcastle Materials, prompting change into the style of management.

After 16 years under Oldcastle management, Oldcastle decided to divest from the golf course business after golf became less of a priority for them. The Odenbach family happily repurchased Greystone, excited to continue the tradition of the family business.

Dusty Odenbach, a third-generation member of the Odenbach family that built the golf courses, was excited to convert the golf course from corporate back to the family business. Now the Director of Golf, Dusty, as well as his cousin Alex Odenbach, General Manager, put a breath of new life into the course. Some of just the first things they did were expanding amenities such as new outdoor patio seating, an outdoor tent for large events, revamping Stoney’s Pub from just a bar and grill into a full-service restaurant, and even re-designing the Greystone logo. They were adamant about not just owning a golf course, but a full-blown experience.

The course itself, though not specifically a ‘Links’ course, incorporates traditional features of classic Scottish design. Designed by Craig Schreiner, a member of the award-winning Hurdzan Design group, created this championship-length, 18-hole Scottish-links style course that offers four different sets of tees on every hole. The course itself has been noted as “challenging and playable”, it’s a course that will really test every area of your game.

Greystone’s Golf Superintendent, Tim Hahn, has been at the course since the beginning. Tim and the rest of the maintenance crew do a wonderful job of keeping the course in the best conditions all year. Due to Greystone’s natural water supplies, the course stays a lush green for the majority of the season. As for aeration of the greens, Greystone does theirs in late August, so when the course heals up in September, it affords golfers an amazing fall golf season. Autumn at Greystone offers not just perfect green conditions, but stunning views.
